Franz Ströher founded Wella Professionals in 1880, initially producing hair tulle for securing wigs. He was later joined by his two sons, Karl and George. Together, they registered the company name Wella, derived from the word "wave" (German "Welle"), with the patent office and focused on developing products designed to create permanent waves in the hair.
With many further innovations, including the world’s first portable perming device, the introduction of Koleston for hair colour, the development of the first demi-permanent hair colour and the patented Metal Purifier technology, Wella Professionals delivers a comprehensive range of hair care products.
The Research and Development Centre in Darmstadt, Germany, opened in 1957, further underlining Wella Professionals' commitment to advancing hair care, colour and styling solutions valued by hairdressers and stylists worldwide.
